Do I Need an Inspection To Renew My Tags in Maryland?
Yes. Most vehicles in Maryland must undergo emissions testing every two years as part of the registration renewal process, while an annual safety inspection is not required.
Under the Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP), Maryland schedules emissions tests and notifies vehicle owners when testing is due. The test fee is $30 at full-service stations or $26 at self-service kiosks.
After passing the emissions test and successfully renewing your tags, Maryland issues validation stickers displayed on the rear license plate. The month sticker is placed in the upper left corner of the plate, and the year sticker is placed in the upper right corner of the rear plate.
Exemptions and Special Circumstances
Certain vehicles are exempt from emissions testing under Maryland VEIP requirements. Exemptions include vehicles model year 1995 or older under 8,500 pounds gross vehicle weight, manufactured diesel vehicles, electric vehicles, vehicles weighing more than 26,000 pounds, motorcycles, and historic vehicles.
Additionally, under the six-year exemption, vehicles under original ownership are exempt from emissions testing for the first six years of the vehicle's life.
